Camp Scuba

Camp Scuba is:

A specialized program designed to introduce under-served youth to scuba diving while cultivating their interests in the great outdoors and marine life.

Camp Scuba will accomplish:

Training participants to become certified scuba divers. We are especially interested in serving children and youth who have no prior experience in scuba diving and who need a challenge. Scuba diving builds life skills, shapes character, and provides potential for a much wider variety of professional career opportunities.

Participation Requirements:

  • Pass a swim test – 6 laps and 10 minutes of floating

  • A “Can Do” attitude

  • Honesty and integrity

  • A one-time application fee of $100

2020 Camp Scuba Dates:

  • Try Scuba Introductory Dive & Orientation - May 30th from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m at Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center

  • Camp Scuba Class - July 13th - 15th (16th available if needed) 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Atlantic Avenue Recreation Center 

  • Certification Dives - July 27th - 29th in Williston, FL

  • Graduation Ceremony - August 8th from 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (Location TBD)

What will participants gain:

  • Confidence – Completing PADI Open Water certification will give our students a great sense of accomplishment. This is a great achievement.

  • A sense of personal responsibility and accountability in using and handling scuba equipment and gear. The emphasis on safety will teach our students how to be safe while diving. This training will also help students learn to manage risks in a healthy way.

  • Improved mental capacity and physical health. Scuba diving is a vigorous activity and students will learn to adapt in numerous environments.

  • Added career opportunities. By becoming a certified scuba diver, doors will open to a fun and adventurous marine life. Learning to care for nature and putting scuba diving into play is a win-win endeavor. Our students will explore and learn about natural waterways and increase their desire to conserve nature, which could ultimately lead to interests in pursuing a career in marine-related fields.
